The Minnesota Vikings and Sam Darnold got more out of each other than anyone thought they would in 2024. Darnold would end up becoming an MVP candidate, while the team went an astounding 14-3 during the season.
Despite their success, both parties are heading towards a separation, so where will Sam Darnold fit in?
PFF wrote up where key offensive free agents would fit best in 2025, with Darnold being one of the players discussed. They have him fitting in best with a team looking for a fresh start in one of the toughest divisions in football, the Las Vegas Raiders.
PFF writes, “The new Raiders front office has a crucial decision to make under center this offseason, and they have the requisite cap space to facilitate a deal. Without top-five draft capital, making a play for one of the top quarterback draft prospects appears out of reach, likely lending itself to the Raiders making a strong offer.”
While the way that the Vikings seemingly move on from Darnold remains unclear, they have options.
The Vikings could decide to let Darnold go without much drama, or they could seek compensation for his departure. It could come in the form of a transition tag, guaranteeing them some sort of draft pick, or a franchise tag before trading them for a package of their own creation.
Lots to be discussed in the offices of the Vikings in the coming weeks.
