Remember when the Minnesota Vikings moved off Stefon Diggs and were rewarded with Justin Jefferson? Well, apparently the team had the thought of doing something similar with Jefferson and one of the stars in this year’s draft.
According to Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Vikings were eyeing a trade that would’ve moved them into the top five to select LSU’s Malik Nabers and Jefferson was part of the deal.
“Pssst,” Walters wrote at the bottom of his column. “There was buzz at draft time that the Vikings wanted to move from No. 11 to No. 5, not to pick a quarterback but to get LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers, who was picked No. 6 by the Giants. Had that trade occurred, Jefferson would have been traded and Nabers would have been the No. 1 receiver.”
It’s a pretty stunning report, if true. Not only because the idea of the three-time Pro Bowler wearing another uniform is wild in itself. But because Jefferson remains on the Vikings with no new contract.
Obviously, Minnesota has control of Jefferson’s future until at least 2025 (if it decides to use the franchise tag) but if the team does plan on signing him to a long-term extension the price is only going up.
Lions wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown just signed for four years, $120 million with nearly $80 million guaranteed. So it’s hard to imagine JJettas signing for anything less than that if he plans to stay with the Purple and Gold.
