The good guys trail early
We’ve made it through the first quarter of the 2024 NFC North Championship Game in Detroit, and your Minnesota Vikings trail the Detroit Lions by a score of 7-0.
The Lions got the football first, as the Vikings won the toss and chose to defer to the second half. Detroit managed one first down on their opening drive but wound up having to punt after a big tackle for loss by Jonathan Greenard. Minnesota then took over at their own 13-yard line.
Minnesota then pushed the ball to near midfield and nearly had a big play from Sam Darnold to T.J. Hockenson for a first down but the pass fell incomplete and the Vikings punted it away. Detroit took over at their own 22 after the return.
Detroit pushed into Minnesota territory and faced a 4th-and-5 from the Minnesota 39. Detroit went for it, as you’d expect, and they picked it up on a pass to Jameson Williams. One play later, the Lions got into the end zone on a 25-yard touchdown run by Jahmyr Gibbs to give them a 7-0 lead with less than two minutes left in the quarter.
On the first play of the next possession, Darnold took a huge sack for a 17-yard loss, which led to a three-and-out. As we move to the second quarter of play, the Lions have it 1st-and-10 from their own 31.
