There has been much discussion about who will be the quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings in 2025. Sam Darnold had a great 2024 season before the year’s final two games. And Aaron Rodgers is set to part ways with the New York Jets, potentially setting the stage for a Brett Favre-like career path that ends in Minnesota.
Jared Allen, who starred at defensive end for the Minnesota Vikings from 2008-13, joined Kay Adams on her podcast Up & Adams on Tuesday. The 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee was asked if he was in favor of bringing Rodgers to Minnesota next year.
I say, reluctantly yes, only because I experienced it with Brett, right? And it’s creepy how it’s the same path, right? You know, Brett went to the Jets. Everybody thought Brett was done.He came to us in ’09, and he had fire, right? And I mean, he was hungry, and we went out and destroyed the [NFC] North. I’m not opposed to that, right?
When asked if he would prefer Rodgers or Darnold on the same contract, Allen again went with Rodgers.
If it’s the same price and it’s a one year stop gap, I’m taking Aaron Rodgers.
It isn’t surprising that Allen would give Rodgers a vote of confidence. Allen faced Rodgers twice a year in Minnesota, seeing the future Hall of Fame quarterback in his prime.
Allen also came dangerously close to the Super Bowl in 2009 with the Vikings with Favre at quarterback. Minnesota was one game away from going to the Super Bowl, and Favre’s play that season was a significant reason why. Allen believes Rodgers could do the same for a Vikings team that failed at the end of the 2024 season because of its quarterback.
Still, the Vikings are unlikely to sign Rodgers in 2025. His play has significantly dropped since 2021, and his Achilles tear in 2023 makes it even harder to believe he can play anywhere close to that level.
Plus, as much as everyone loves to reminisce on Favre’s 2009 season, the final season was a disaster. Injuries finally caught up to him, forcing him to miss games for the first time since 1992.
Rodgers to the Vikings is fun to talk about, but it will likely end next month when another team signs or trades for the 41-year-old quarterback.
