J.J. McCarthy’s first virtual press conference as a member of the Minnesota Vikings took an unexpected turn. That’s because he received a phone call from NHL legend Wayne Gretzky.
Believe it or not, McCarthy declined Gretzky’s call. He then let the Minnesota reporters know about it.
“Oh wow, that’s Wayne Gretzky,” McCarthy said. “I’m sorry about that. Hockey guy 101 and I’m going to the hockey state.
McCarthy’s marketing agent is actually good friends with Gretzky, who called the young quarterback after Michigan won the national championship.
“Just being able to sit there and to be witness to the greatness that is spreading his appreciation to what I was able to do and what I was able to represent meant so much,” McCarthy said, via NHL.com. “Growing up, he was one of my G.O.A.T.S. and on my Mount Rushmore. I give so much credit to him because he inspired me so much.”

McCarthy finished his Michigan career with 6,226 passing yards, 49 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He’ll now be tasked with replacing Kirk Cousins in Minnesota.
Only time will tell if McCarthy is truly a franchise quarterback.
