Byron Murphy, Minnesota Vikings, Agree to Contract
Murphy hit the open market at the right time, as the former second-round pick is coming off the best season of his career. Playing under defensive coordinator Brian Flores, Murphy earned the first Pro Bowl selection of his career in 2024. Starting and appearing in all 17 games, the cornerback finished the season with six interceptions, 14 passes defended, 81 tackles, six tackles-for-loss, and a 73.4 PFF grade, the 22nd-best mark of 118 eligible players. The Vikings had a dominant 14-win regular season but went one-and-done in the playoffs to the Los Angeles Rams.
Byron Murphy originally entered the league as a second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Selected by the Arizona Cardinals, the Washington product struggled during his first season in the league. Starting in all 16 games, the cornerback finished his inaugural season with one interception, 78 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, 10 passes defended, and an underwhelming 48.3 PFF grade.
The cornerback improved in Year 2, appearing in 15 games while making seven starts. While his role diminished, he played better when on the field, recording eight passes defended, two sacks, 51 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, and two quarterback hits. He played a similar role in 2021 and 2022 and helped the team make the playoffs during his third season in the league. Unfortunately, Arizona lost in blowout fashion to the Los Angeles Rams.
Following the expiration of his rookie contract, Byron Murphy landed a starting job with the Minnesota Vikings as a free agent. Starting and appearing in 14 games, the cornerback finished the season with three interceptions, 13 passes defended, 57 tackles, and four tackles-f0r-loss.
Since signing his rookie contract, Byron Murphy has appeared in 79 games while making 87 starts. While on the field, the Washington product has recorded 14 interceptions and 61 passes defended.
