P.J. Fleck’s longtime assistant coach will not return
FootballScoop’s Zach Barnett is reporting that Minnesota Golden Gophers special teams coordinator Rob Wenger is stepping down from his position to pursue other opportunities.
A source also confirmed the report with 247 Sports’ Ryan Burns.
This is a significant shake-up for head coach P.J. Fleck, who first hired Wenger as special teams coordinator at Western Michigan. The pair have coached together for the past 11 years.
The Gophers’ struggles on specials team under Wenger’s leadership have been well documented, but there have been bright spots throughout his tenure. Dragan Kesich was recently named the Big Ten’s Bakken-Andersen Kicker of the Year, for example.
