In a stunning development, Minnesota defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman has resigned to take the same position with the Miami (Fl.) Hurricanes.
Miami head coach Mario Cristobal fired defensive coordinator Lance Guidry earlier this week. Per the Pioneer Press’s Andy Greder, Cristobal’s offer to Hetherman was “substantial.”
In December, Hetherman signed a contract extension through the 2026 season, which would have raised his annual salary to $1.2 million.
“I think we’re happy to stay here,” he said when asked about his contract extension during a press conference prior to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. “We’ve got a young daughter, and my wife loves Minneapolis. We’re really excited about the future right now.”
In his first (and now last) year with the Golden Gophers, Hetherman’s defense ranked 22nd nationally in run defense, 16th in pass defense, and 13th in scoring defense.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel is reporting that head coach P.J. Fleck plans to promote from within to replace Hetherman, which likely means safeties coach Danny Collins.
