Gophers come up short at Maryland
Minnesota battled Maryland on Monday night but came up short, losing 77-71 in College Park. In the first half the Gophers made 5 of their 9 three point attempts and used a 15-2 run to hold a 35-32 lead over the Terrapins. But Maryland’s Derik Queen scored 18 of his 27 points in the second half and led his team to the win.
THE STAT: This was actually a very good shooting night for Minnesota. They have shot better from three just twice this seaon and those were against Bethune Cookman and Oral Roberts. So hitting 47% from three, on the road, against a Big Ten opponent is encouraging. They were also 19/23 from the free throw line.
BAD MOVE: Minnesota struggled with turnovers, but their biggest issue continues to be offensive execution. Last night it was particularly evident in their end-of-shot-clock scenarios.
NOTABLE: For a team that is now 0-6 in the Big Ten, this was a really nice effort by Minnesota. They got the free throw line by being aggressive, they out-rebonded Maryland and there was effort throughout all 40 minutes. There are many questions about the overall talent on this year’s team, what is the future of this program and will they start to win any games. But so far they are still fighting and giving effort.
UP NEXT: Minnesota returns home to face Michigan on Thursday.
