Gopher Hockey Releases New “ Taconite Gray” Alternate Uniform

There had been hints they were coming….and here they are

There had been rumors it was going to happen for a few seasons now, but until this week, the Minnesota Golden Gophers men’s hockey team had not worn a jersey not colored maroon, white or gold since the infamous Casey Hankinson designed alternate black, maroon and gold jerseys of the late 1990’s.

That streak ends this Friday night when the newly minted #1 team in the nation will host #3 Michigan State in their new Taconite Grey uniforms. The Gophers revealed photos of the uniforms on Sunday on their social media pages.

The uniforms were originally designed by the 2022-23 team and were ordered along with the new white, maroon and gold uniforms that Minnesota debuted last season. Unfortunately due to shipping delays, the uniforms did not arrive until this summer, and then it took an extra few months to get names and numbers on them locally to be ready to be worn this season.

The jerseys will remind many of the “Anthracite” colored ones the Gopher football team wore for several seasons. The jerseys will be worn with the normal maroon breezers and new grey, gold and maroon striped socks.

After the jerseys were released online, the reaction from Minnesota fans was a mixed bag. Many seemed to like them, especially the younger crowd. Some complaint’s voiced by the anti-taconite crown include the awkward maroon collar, and the fact that the color scheme does have a striking similarity to Arizona State’s uniforms.
