The former Gopher guard will suit up for the Clippers next season
Cam Christie, after playing just one year for the Gophers, has been drafted by LA Clippers in the 2nd round of the 2024 NBA Draft. Going 46th overall, Christie is the first Gopher drafted since Daniel Oturu was taken 33rd overall by the Clippers in 2020.
Height: 6’6”
Weight: 190
Points/game: 11.3
3pt FG%: 39%
Reb/game: 3.6
Strengths
- Shooting – Christie projects to be a very good shooter at the next level. His stroke is smooth and consistent, with added strength he is going to be an excellent shooter for the Clippers. But he’s more than just a shooter who stretches the floor, he is a very good pull-up shooter off the dribble. He may not be a strong finisher at the rim, but he can score.
- Age – NBA teams love getting younger players. In a draft that is not considered as strong, Christie being just shy of 19 years old is very appealing. He will have time with the Clippers to add some muscle and learn the NBA game.
- Athleticism – Smooth, athletic and seemingly always in control of his body. His 6’6” frame for a SG is nice as well.
- Ball Control – Christie is smart with the basketball, is not turnover-prone and knows how to move the ball to the open man.
Needs Work
- Strength – A slight frame, some time to add weight and strength will be great for Chritie.
- Defense – He knows where to be and understands positioning, could use more on-the-ball skills to defend the elite wings at the next level.
How will he fit?
Christie joins former Gopher, Amir Coffey on the Clippers roster. But this is more of a developmental pick for the oldest roster in the NBA.
As mentioned, he will need time to grow and add strength. From a basketball perspective, he just needs more time learning the NBA game and repetition. He has the ability to play at this level, he just needs time.
It seems very likely that Christie will primarily be a G-League candidate this coming season and will develop into a productive player for the Clippers. They have quite a few players with expiring contracts after this season, so Christie will have an opportunity to contribute in his sophomore NBA season.
