The UCLA Bruins are scrambling to find a new head coach following the surprise departure of Chip Kelly. One coach who quickly emerged as a top candidate for the job has seemingly addressed rumors.
Taking to X on Saturday, Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck declared that he is “honored” to be the head coach of the Golden Gophers and said that he’s getting ready for 2024. Fleck was identified by several college football insiders as a candidate for the vacant UCLA job, but appears to be staying put.
“Honored to be the Head Football Coach at Minnesota!! Ready for an ELITE 2024 season!! Now, back to our wedding anniversary trip!! #RTB #HYPRR #SkiUMah,” Fleck wrote.
With the recent news that Ryan Grubb would be leaving Alabama to become offensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks despite having announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide, there might be some skepticism that he will keep his word.
But for the most part, fans appear delighted to see that he’s staying put.
Fleck is 50-34 as head coach of the Golden Gophers, with one top 10 finish and a trip to the Big Ten Championship Game in 2019. He also went 30-22 in four seasons as head coach of Western Michigan, including a 13-1 season and a trip to the Cotton Bowl in 2016.
Did UCLA miss out on an elite candidate, or are both schools better off with Fleck staying in Minnesota?
