The 28-year-old spent the majority of the season on the Wolves bench, playing in just 35 total minutes, mostly garbage time. His signing five months ago came as a bit of a surprise, as he occupied the final roster spot at the time. Dozier had a history with Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations, Tim Connelly, who signed him to multiple short contracts during his time with the Denver Nuggets.
There has been some speculation by Wolves fans that this move would open up a roster spot for a potential future trade ahead of the NBA trade deadline on February 6, 2025. However, it is much more realistic that this was yet another cost-cutting move to save the front office a hefty sum of money. ESPN’s Bobby Marks detailed the amount Minnesota saved by making this move.
Minnesota announced that they have waived PJ Dozier.
The Timberwolves will incur a $1,051,255 cap hit.
The waiver saves Minnesota roughly $5M toward the luxury tax.

It may be tough to read deeper into this transaction other than saving Glen Taylor (and/or potentially Marc Lore & Alex Rodriguez) a handful of shekels. As the ownership dispute and arbitrary lags into late January, the fanbase is left creating hypothetical trades or theorizing Leonard Miller minutes in the main rotation.
There has been some complaints from Wolves faithful about Minnesota’s rotations, or lack thereof, by Head Coach Chris Finch. Though Dozier never came close to cracking into them, we’ve seen some opportunities for young Josh Minott lately. Prior to that, rookie point guard Rob Dillingham had a handful of games playing meaningful minutes as well. Joe Ingles is finally healthy again. However, fans continue to clamor for a lengthier rotation moving forward. Shedding Dozier may not signal the start for that, but who knows what future moves by the front office or coaching staff may be around the corner.
