For the second game in a row, Anthony Edwards has crossed the 40-point mark. His latest 41-point performance marked his 14th career 40-point game, which sets a Timberwolves record. He passed his former teammate Karl-Anthony Towns, who had 13 40-point games with the Timberwolves. Edwards also recently passed Towns for most career threes made in Timberwolves history.
This is his fourth 40-point game this season, tying his best from last season. Edwards is only 23 years old, so there could be more explosive scoring nights for him in the future. It comes at a time where the Timberwolves need it the most.
Anthony Edwards Makes History Following 41-Point Performance
Ant Man’s Scoring Tear
Anthony Edwards has scored 90 points over his last two games (45.0 PPG). These scoring performances were expected after Donte DiVincenzo and Julius Randle went down with injuries. Ant Man is taking more shots as a result. He attempted 25 shots against the Rockets and 28 shots against the Bulls.
We also shouldn’t ignore that he crossed the 40-point mark during a back-to-back. He scored 49 against the Bulls and followed that up with his 41 against the Rockets. It was the first time in his career that Ant dropped 40+ points in consecutive games.
The team needed every point from Edwards against the Rockets. It was a nail biter until Ant Man took over late to put the game out of reach. We’ll see how many more 40-point games Edwards has left this season. If nothing drastic happens over the next few years, then expect this record to be put out of reach.
Legends He’s Passed
Only 17 players have scored 40 points while playing for the Timberwolves. Only seven of them have had multiple 40 point games with the club. Three players however, have scored 40 ten times with the team: Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Kevin Love. If you’re wondering where Kevin Garnett falls on the list, he’s fifth with four 40-point games behind Andrew Wiggins, who’s done it eight times.
Garnett is regarded as the greatest Timberwolves player in franchise history. He played 12 seasons with the team before being traded to the Boston Celtics.
It only took Edwards two seasons to match KG’s record of four 40-point games in Timberwolves history. Now in his fifth season, he stands alone at the number one spot.
More to Come
It didn’t take long for Edwards to establish himself as one of the league’s best young superstars. Edwards has now claimed two franchise records in Minnesota, both previously held by Karl-Anthony Towns. Another team record Ant could break is most three-pointers made in a season. That’s held by Malik Beasley, who made 240 in the 2021-2022 season. Edwards so far has made 207 threes.
Edwards also became the first Timberwolves player to make 1,000 threes for the team. There’s no question that if Edwards remains in Minnesota, he will eventually break more franchise records. More importantly, his strong play has led to back-to-back wins. The Timberwolves are currently sixth in the West with a half-game lead over the Clippers. With Randle and DiVincenzo sidelined, Edwards will have more scoring opportunities in the future. We’ll have to wait and see if these strong performances will lead to more wins.
